In a male dominated genre, a young talented Lusaka based female rapper is eager to make a difference away from the gimmicky sound associated with Hip-Hop.

Mainala Silondwa musically known as Suli The Rapper has adopted a more traditional sub-genre of Hip-Hop referred to by enthusiasts as Boom Bap, mixed with Soul.

While Suli believes the local scene has evolved, the artiste is of the view that the industry is too commercialized.
The young wordsmith desires to see more artistry from her peers in the industry.

“I think it’s (Hip-Hop) bigger than it’s ever been. But it’s a little too commercialized for my liking. I think the soul and the storytellers are missing,” Suli said.

Her new single titled ‘Quarter Life Crisis’ offers an ideal demonstration on how it should be done.

The young rapper who recruited Geo Musiwa as the producer for this debut single released on December 1, displays clever wordplay and storytelling in this new artistic masterpiece.

Signed to local record label Xplode+, Suli draws inspiration from unlikely sources.

In addition to Hip-Hop which is quite obvious, other legendary Zambian genres have had a musical impact on the youthful creative.

“I love what a good number of artistes are doing, but not to the extent of it inspiring me. The old era does a better job at that, for me. And not just Hip-Hop, Zamrock and Kalindula too,” Suli revealed.

Suli is targeting both the local and international audience with her new music.

“My music is meant for anyone who can relate to it. If that that person happens to be in the country or outside isn’t really much of importance,” she said.

‘Quarter Life Crisis’ is available on all streaming platforms.
