Chongwe Mayor Christopher Habeenzu and Madido Ward Councilor Janet Chisenga have facilitated the handover of a wheelchair to eleven year old Chikondi Mulenga of Madido Ward.
The wheelchair was donated by Campus Crusade for Christ – Zambia following collaborative efforts from the Mayor and area Councilor to help Chikondi attain mobility and dignity by the aid of a wheelchair which her family lacked the financial capacity to acquire thus needed assistance.
Speaking during the official handover, Chongwe Mayor Christopher Habeenzu said he is happy to play a role in providing assistance to people with special needs.
Mr. Habeenzu said he was pleased to help organize for the provision of a wheelchair to be given to Chikondi after recognizing her limitation in mobility.
He stated that life becomes restrictive and very difficult for a child, especially as she sees other people of her age moving freely.
He additionally highlighted the importance of helping children in circumstances of this magnitude to achieve their dreams in any small way possible.
“We all have limitations but some are more severe than others” he said.
“It takes the efforts of others to come in and help, so I hope that this gesture goes a long way in bettering the life of Chikondi” he added.
The Mayor emphasized the importance of identifying people in need through the use of councilors in their wards in order to ensure that they are also given assistance.
And Chikondi’s mother Christin Phiri expressed gratitude for the kind gesture, stating that it will go a long way in improving her daughter’s quality of life.
