Chongwe Mayor Christopher Habeenzu says there is need to enhance participation of persons with disabilities in local and community development in order to fulfill the sustainable development goals promise of leaving no one behind.
Mr. Habeenzu said It is without a doubt that people with disabilities are a crucial component of our population, therefore it is imperative that their rights and freedom are respected.
He was speaking in a speech read on his behalf by Palabana Ward Councilor Dickson Shamba during the first Town Hall meeting held with various stakeholders to raise awareness on disability inclusion.
Mr. Habeenzu said disability inclusion is a growing phenomenon towards a community based inclusive development agenda.
He stated that he is well aware that there is still work to be done in the District in terms of achieving a disability inclusive, accessible and sustainable society.
“It is therefore important that we take more practical steps if we are to achieve an inclusive district for persons with disabilities to fully and effectively participate without any form of discrimination” he said.
The Mayor emphasized that Chongwe District should be a leading example of disability inclusive development.
He stated that this can be easier achieved through the active participation of all heads of departments present at the workshop, traditional leaders, civil societies and the media.
He further said It is our responsibility to ensure that these barriers are broken as we advocate for equality, non- discrimination and effective participation of persons with disabilities.
“This, on its own will raise the respect for the inherent dignity of all those who are disabled” he explained.
Mr. Habeenzu reiterated the need for all infrastructure plans and designs to put into place accessibility features for persons with disabilities here in Chongwe District.
Speaking during the same meeting, Disability Rights Watch (DRW) Director Waliuya Wamundila said it is imperative that Chongwe becomes part of the National Agenda of disability inclusion.
Mr. Wamundila said persons with disabilities are left behind in almost all sectors of development such as education, health, employment and entrepreneurship.
