The Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) has expressed concern with repeated advertisements and sale of an unauthorised product called Gammora on social media.
The product is being sold on social media platforms purported to cure Human Immune Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome( AIDS).
ZAMRA public relations officer Christabel Illiamupu cautioned members of the public against the purchase or use of Gammora as its safety ,quality and efficacy has not been ascertained and no marketing authorization was granted by the authority.
“In line with its mandate, the Authority has put in place guidelines and procedures for grant of marketing authorisation and approvals for advertising/ promotion of medicines and allied substances,” Ms Illiamupu said.
She said the authority is perturbed that despite arrests and prosecutions of people involved in the sale of Gammora in the recent past, perpetrators have continued to advertise and sale the product.
Ms. Illiamupu said the Authority only approves advertising and sale of medicines and allied substances which are authorised.
She said ZAMRA has continued with investigations and wishes to warn perpetrators to refrain from the sale and advertisement of unapproved products in order to avoid risking public health and prosecution.
Ms. Illiamupu said the Authority continues to support researchers who intend to investigate possible treatment for HIV and AIDS and other medicinal products in accordance with laid down procedures and guidelines in its quest to promote and protect public and animal health.
