North Western Province Minister Robert Lihefu says government is considering a proposal by various stakeholders to create a new district on the west bank of Zambezi to be named Mwange district.

Speaking during a media briefing in Solwezi, the Provincial Minister said Zambezi West has lagged behind in development as it is far from the district administration office making it hard to receive a fair share of development.

“Apart from that, the district is too big and that is why stakeholders are calling for a creation of another district especially in tHE West Bank,” said Mr. Lihefu.

He said Chief Chinyama has assured government that all his subjects are in support of the calls to declare Mwange a stand alone district.

He disclosed that the process of creating new districts was started by the late President Michael Sata led government and that consultations have been conducted with a lot of stakeholders supporting the idea.

He said the area becomes impassable during rainy season and that contractors assigned to work on various projects in the area shun away as a result of the bad state of the road.

The Provincial Minister once declared as a district, the area will attract investment in various sectors which will result into improved livelihood for the local people.

And Mr. Lihefu said government intends to complete unfinished projects in new districts of Kalumbila, Mushindamo, Manyinga and Ikelengi.

He said there is urgent need to have the aforementioned districts completed in order to properly provide services to the people.

“That’s commitment from the part of government and that has to be done this year,” he said.
