About 200 illegal miners stormed Kansenseli Gold Mine in Mwinilunga in the early hours Sunday 12 September.
According to North western province deputy commissioner of police Dr. Fred Mulenga, the illegal miners stormed the mine site with a view to gain access and dig gold.
Dr. Mulenga however disclosed that the illegal miners where swiftly repelled by alert police officers.
“In the process, part of the fence was damaged while one of the ring leaders sustained injury on left leg from a rubber bullet,” said Dr. Mulenga.
He further disclosed that two more illegal miners were apprehended as the rest scampered for their lives.
He said the ring leader who injured himself was picked and taken to the hospital by police and will be jointly charged with criminal trespass and malicious damage to public property.
And North Western Province Permanent Secretary Willies Mangimela has appealed to residents in Mwinilunga to avoid taking the law in their own hands by storming the mine site.
Mr. Mangimela said the people in the area should allow the operations at the mine site to continue in a peaceful environment.
“Not what we are seeing where people are forcing them selves on the mine site because lives may be lost. And that’s what we don’t want,” he said.
He disclosed that yesterday’s act was the second one which should not be tolerated.
