The Irish government has hailed Zambia’s democracy saying it is one of the strongest on the Africa continent.
Speaking when she paid a courtesy call on North Western Province Permanent Secretary Col Grandson Katambi, Irish Ambassador to Zambia Bronagh Carr said Zambia has been recognised not just in Africa but the world at large to be a beacon of peace and democracy.
Ms. Carr stated that this could be seen in the smooth transitions of administration the country has had since Independence the latest being the August 12.
“And I can assure you just as I assured His excellence President Hakainde Hichilema that the Irish government will continue to support you,” said Ms. Carr.
She said her government has had a cordial bilateral relationship with the Zambian Government which dates all the way back to the 1950s through various programs.
She said some of the areas in which the two governments have cooperated is in investment, governance and human right issues.
She further mentioned that her government has been supporting programs aimed at fighting Gender Based Violence (GBV) as well as promotion of women and girl’s rights.
She said the empowerment of women and girls is important for the future development of the country hence the attention given to it.
And Col Katambi said the support the Zambian government has received from the Irish government cannot be quantified.
“We are so grateful for the support and we look forward for such support going forward,” he said.
