Kasempa Town Council Chairperson Brian Kakonkanya has appealed to the residents of Kasempa to hold accountable the people charged with increased K25.7m constituency development fund.
Mr. Kakonkanya says this is because the onus is not on the council to ensure the funds are correctly applied but it lies with the people themselves.
He said the local residents are supposed to be instrumental in ensuring that the funds are applied correctly and responsibly.
“These funds are not for council nor the member of Parliament but for the people themselves, so the people that will be ministering these funds will have to be accountable to the general public, ” said Mr. Kakonkanya.
His comments come in the wake of the Ministers of Finance’s budget presentation and the pronouncement of the increased constituency development fund from K1.6 million to K25.7 million per constituency.
And Mr. Kakonkanya has disclosed that the local authority has set a target of upgrading Kasempa from a Town Council to a municipal status by 2026.
He said with the increased funding under CDF, it will be easy to attain the vision by the set period.
He said Kasempa just like other district has lagged behind on so many fronts especially infrastructure due to inadequate funding.
“The monies where so centralised and most of it was going in individual pockets which is a different situation now because the President is saying that money should go to the people down there.
“And economic development will be realised when the money is put to good use with a good development plan in place. So, for us as council we are happy that the funds have been increased,” he said.
He revealed that with funding, the local authority is planning to improve infrastructure in the district by putting in place modern bus station and market.
“The other target is road infrastructure, we want to ensure that our township roads are worked on so that we easy movement of motorists,” he said.
He has appealed to the people to work closely with the council in developing the district.
