The Lusaka City Council (LCC) buried 42 unclaimed bodies at Chingwere cemetery following the expiration of the 14 day period for members of the public to identify them.
Last month, LCC received a request from the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) to bury 42 unclaimed bodies which had been laying in the mortuary for sometime giving rise to an unpleasant mortuary environment contrary to the Public Health Act Cap 295 of the Laws of Zambia.
The bodies had also caused congestion in the mortuary hence the need to decongest the facility.
Consequently, LCC caused a public notice in the press about its intention to bury the the 42 unclaimed bodies.
At the expiry of the assigned period, no body was claimed.
This is the second time this year that the Council is burying unclaimed bodies.
This is contained in a statement issued to the media by LCC Public Relations Manager Mwaka Nakweti
