The Luanshya Municipal Council is concerned about the rampant vandalism of public infrastructure built using Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
The municipality has observed that some unscrupulous individuals are vandalising CDF funded in the district.
Speaking in an interview in Luanshya, Council Public Relations Officer, Gideon Thole said facilities such as public toilets and markets , which were built using CDF, have been vandalised.
Mr Thole said the newly installed electricity supply system and water reticulation installations in markets, and public toilets have been vandalised.
He said the rampant acts of vandalism have negatively effected the council’s operations and service delivery to the residents.
This, he said, is posing health hazard to the public as the municipality has been forced to cut water supply to public toilets to facilitate repair works.
He said Mikomfwa Main Market is among the affected public facilities.
Mr Thole said it is worrisome that the retrogressive acts of vandalism are happening in broad daylight.
” For the past one month, the council has recorded one case of theft of an overhead cable at morning market and D market in Mikomfwa,” Mr Thole said.
He said the theft overhead cables has resulted in the disruption of power supply to markets while the theft of waterpipes has forced the municipality to close the public toilets at Mikomfwa main market.
” The replacement of the vandalized and stolen property is a drain on the council’s resources as it is an expense on service delivery to the people of Luanshya” he said.
He the council has reported the vandalismcases to the police while the municipality’s Engineering Department is assessing the damage in order to replace the vandalized installations.
