A civic leader in Mwinilunga has bemoaned the continues reports of illegal miners storming the Kasenseli Gold Mine in the area which recently resulted into shooting of two people.

Mwinilunga Town Council chairperson Jonathan Chinyimba said in an interview that it is unfortunate that such sad incidences have continued to occur at the mine site.

Mr. Chinyimba who described ongoing operations at Kasenseli as illegal, called for an end to the life threatening clashes and shooting of what he termed as innocent youths at the mine.

“It is unfortunate that we have continued recording reports of storming of the mine site which is resulting into shooting. This should come to an end because we do not want lives to be lost,” he said.

Mr. Chinyimba called on the head of state through relevant Ministries to quickly engage a serious investor who is able to translate benefits of the high value resource to the host community through job creation.

He mentioned that any delays to engage a serious investor at the mine will see continued clashes between Police and residents who go to the mine to earn a living.

“As long as a well meaning investor who will be able to create employment for the locals is not engaged, people will continue going to the mine due to poverty,” he said.

He said it is unfortunate that the people of Mwinilunga seem not to benefit from the resource.
