BOXER Catherine Phiri’s return to the ring has been moved to next month with her bout against Zimbabwe’s Kudakwashe Chiwendere now set for February 26.
Phiri was set to take to the ring on January 29 for the World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Bantam Weight title fight against Chiwendere.
In a statement availed to the media, Phiri’s promoters Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) confirmed that fight has been moved following consultation with the Ministry of Sport.
“OQBP was privileged to meet with the Minister of Youth, Sports and Arts, Honorable Elvis Nkandu. At the meeting we discussed among other things the upcoming fight.
“We were advised to reschedule the fight so that the corporate world can be engaged at a cocktail to be hosted by OQBP in liaison with the Ministry, an event at which resource mobilization will be the main topic.
“The Minister is appreciative of the economic downturns due to the COVID – 19 pandemic but would like to engage the corporate world with a view of finding a workable solution,” OQBP administrative secretary Ben Saili stated.
