The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has called on parents and guardians to ensure that pupils use appropriate modes of transport as they go back to their respective homes as Schools close on Friday 10th December, 2021.

RTSA Information Officer Roy Habaalu said the Agency anticipates an increase in traffic on the road network as most pupils travel for holiday and other places across the country.

He said the increase in the number of vehicles using the road during this period poses a great risk to all road users if traffic rules and laws are not adhered to.

“In the same vein, parents and guardians are advised not to use trucks or open vans as such kind of vehicles compromise road safety of travelers,” Habaalu said.

The RTSA has observed that trucks are often used for transportation of people contrary to the traffic rules and regulations.

“Appropriate modes of transport such as buses should be used to avoid road traffic accidents which in the past have resulted in tragedies in which many lives have been lost,” He noted.

The Agency is further cautioning all Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers to observe appropriate speed limits to avoid any road traffic accidents during this period and beyond.

The RTSA and Zambia Police will equally be on high alert to ensure that PSV drivers do not contravene the traffic laws by overloading and drive at excessive speed.

He has since cautioned all PSV drivers not to violate measures put in place by the Ministry of Health to avoid the spread of COVID-19 in the transport sector.
