Solwezi Municipal council Town Clerk Bornwell Luanga has disclosed that over 163 kilometers of feeder roads in Solwezi district will be worked on to enhance accessibility in order to spur social and economic activities in remote areas.
Mr. Luanga said the roads will be rehabilitated with financial support from the World Bank adding that the council is working closely with the Road Development Agency (RDA) in the selection of roads to be worked on.
“we received communication from the Ministry of Local Government and we where asked to submit roads between 100 to 150 kilometers mainly feeder roads to be worked on. And the money for this project is not coming from the council but the World Bank through the Ministry of Local Government,” said Mr. Luanga.
He said the local authority will work closely with the contractor to be engaged by the Ministry of Local Government and RDA to undertake the road works in the district.
Mr. Luanga named some of the roads that have been identified to be worked on as Kivuku, Mulenga and Mayondi among others.
He mentioned that priority has been given to roads leading to farming blocks to improve accessibility and ease the transportation of farm inputs and agricultural produce to the markets.
“They will definitely reduce the travel time because we have also noticed that most of these roads are leading to farming blocks and it will be easier for people to transport both farming inputs and also their produce to the markets,” he said.
He said once completed, the roads will open up the areas for more development and attract investments especially in the agriculture sector which will help create jobs and wealth for the people.
