Solwezi Municipal Council has commenced the construction of the 1.5 kilometer Kyankwankwa road and four other roads connecting into Independence Avenue (T5 road).

The four other roads include Shoprite, ZESCO, Zambezi station and Coppers corner respectively which will all be upgraded to bituminous standard.

According to Solwezi municipal council Town Clerk Bornwell Luanga, the project will be financed using part of the property rates retained from Kansanshi mine.

Mr. Luanga disclosed that the local authority collects about K63 million from the mining firm payable in two instalments January to June 50 percent and July to December another 50 percent.

“And this year, the mine has retained K8.5 million which will go towards the road works,” disclosed Mr. Luanga.

He further disclosed that the local authority has a Memorandum of Understanding  (MoU) with Kansanshi mine owing to the fact that Kansanshi roads department has all earth moving equipment required.

“So, in this case, it is the mining company under its roads department that is going carry out the road works on behalf of the local authority,” he said.

He revealed that the construction works are expected to be completed by December this year.

He has advised members of the public to use alternative routes in order to give way to machinery on site.

“Furthermore, booth owners along the said roads are advised to move their booths to alternative places to give way to construction works,” he said.
