TANZANIA-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) has with immediate effect suspended operations between New Kapiri-Mposhi and Kasama due to closure of the Chambeshi Rail Bridge.
TAZARA head of public relations Conrad Simuchile disclosed that train movements between New Kapiri-Mposhi and Kasama in Zambia would be temporarily disrupted to allow for repairs on the Chambeshi Rail Bridge.
Mr. Simuchile said in response to a press query that the section of the track between Chambeshi and Kasama stations, a stretch of 83km, had been closed to passenger trains, in order to avert human risk.
He said the passenger trains would instead only now only run between Kasama and Nakonde until further notice.
“However, to safeguard the interests of our freight traffic customers under these circumstances, wagons carrying cargo are being propelled across the bridge without locomotives, a measure that will guarantee uninterrupted deliveries of cargo to and from Kapiri-Mposhi,” Mr Simuchile said.
He however anticipated to have normal operations restored within 12 weeks once repairs are done.
