A traditional leader in Solwezi has appealed to chiefs in the country to desist from engaging in partisan politics in future elections.
Prior to the just ended general election, various traditional leaders across the country endorsed their preferred presidential candidates and assured them full support.
Senior headman Mulowanyama of Kapijimpanga Chiefdom said it is unfortunate that some traditional leaders openly engaged in partisan politics by endorsing their preferred presidential candidates and assured them of victory in last Thursday’s polls.
The traditional leader said in an interview that some chiefs reached an extent of not allowing candidates they did not endorse from visiting their palaces.
He said there is need for traditional leaders to know that issues of politics should be left to the politicians.
“As traditional leaders, we should instead concentrate on issues of tradition and accommodate everyone regardless of their political affiliation,” said senior headman Mulowanyama.
He said chiefs being the custodian of the land are expected to remain neutral and not take political sides.
“And am very sure the outcome of last week’s polls has taught our traditional leaders a valid lesson going into the future elections that they should never be seen participating in partisan politics by making endorsements,” he said.
He however mentioned that it is the duty of chiefs to work with the government of the day and lobby for development for their respective areas.
He said it is the hope of every Zambian that traditional leaders will no longer be seen to be actively involved in partisan politics by openly endorsing their preferred candidates.
He has congratulated President Hakainde Hichilema for the resounding victory in the August 12 general elections.
The traditional leader has wished Mr. Hichilema God’s wisdom and guidance as he steers the nation to greater heights and prosperity.
