Former Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Hon. Bon Sichinga has called on the Minister of Finance to liquidate the debt owed to local contractors and suppliers.
Speaking at the Building and Construction Summit being held at Pamodzi Hotel, Mr. Sichinga said local contractors are affected adversely when there is delayed payments.
He said the accumulated non-payment of money to contractors has led to bankruptcy for many SMEs.
He said the sector provides jobs especially to skilled, semi skilled and non-skilled young people and required support.
He says he was happy to learn that Government has instituted a debt dismantling strategy to liquidate outstanding payments due to contractors and other debtors.
