Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Hon. Collins Nzovu held a meeting with His Excellency the Egyptian Ambassador to Zambia Mr. Moataz Anwar ahead of the first African Group of Negotiators (AGN) meeting to be held in Livingstone from 14th to 17th March, 22022.

Mr. Anwar paid a courtesy call on Hon. Nzovu and the two discussed a number of issues chiefly on the roadmap of action for the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change at the Conference of the Parties (COP27) later this year.

The African Group of Negotiators is a group of all 54 African countries that enables the continent to negotiate as one alliance during climate change negotiations. During Cop26 in Glasgow, Scotland, Zambia was elected Chair of the African Group for the next two years.

Zambia being the Chair is, therefore, expected to lead the continent in preparing for the next summit which is scheduled for Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt from 7th to 18th November, 2022.

Mr. Anwar highlighted the need for close collaboration between Zambia and Egypt as the two countries are charged with key responsibilities to the successful hosting of Cop27.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP-UNFCC) is a two-week conference that has taken place annually since 1995 and the 2022 session, more commonly referred to as COP27, will be the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference.

Hon Nzovu informed Mr. Anwar that it is the desire of the Ministry of Green Economy to collaborate with the Egyptian government on effective and sustainable use of the environment while facilitating support for adaptation to and mitigation of the effects of climate change.

“We want to learn from Egypt on the path to take as it endeavors to reduce its own carbon footprint through the reduction of emissions from greenhouses, automobiles and the industry among others.”

The Minister added: “The New Dawn government is keen to learn from Egypt’s development experience and is ready to create a job favorable environment for a mutually beneficial cooperation.

On his part, Mr. Anwar assured the Minister of Egypt’s continued support to Zambia.

He said Egypt was available to assist Zambia improve its Energy sector and Agriculture through investments in renewable energy and smart agriculture.

He expressed optimism that Egypt can collaborate and extend to Zambia technology for production in clean energy.
