Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) chairperson , Mwangala Zaloumis has cautioned aspiring candidates against resigning after being nominated for by-elections.

Speaking through ECZ Audit Manager, Naomi Hara at a meeting with candidates and stakeholders, Ms. Zaloumis expressed concern that such withdrawals waste resources and disrupt the electoral process.

“It is the Commission’s goal to ensure elections are conducted smoothly within the set timeframes,” Ms Zaloumis stated, highlighting that candidate resignations are detrimental not only to the Commission but to the nation’s governance.

Zanis reports that Kanchibiya District Electoral Officer, Joseph Zulu echoed these sentiments, noting that withdrawals undermine the entire electoral process. He stressed the importance of candidates fully understanding the nomination process and their commitments before filing.

ECZ is holding briefings to educate political party members in Kanchibiya on electoral procedures ahead of the June 11 nominations for the Chinama ward by-election. The seat fell vacant following a councilor’s resignation, with the by-election scheduled for July 12, 2024.
