Kalumbila Town Council says it has devised a two tier system of addressing sanitation challenges in the district.
Kalumbila Town Council Planning officer Fred Munongo disclosed that the first system will be improve traditional pit latrines in the villages so as to maintain good sanitation in the outskirts of the district.
Mr. Munongo said under the Community Led Total Sanitation, the local authority is encouraging residents to build improved pit latrines using cheap and readily available materials in the villages.
He further disclosed that the other system is the construction of cluster septic tanks in urban areas of the district which he said is being done as a short term measure.
He said the local authority is encouraging the use of cluster septic tanks because they can service a good number of houses.
“But, in a long run, we intend to construct a water and sewerage system that will service the people with clean water and sewerage system,” said Mr. Munongo.
He said the plan to set up a central sewerage system has reached an advanced stage and that many cooperating partners have shown commitment towards the project.
He has appealed to other stakeholders to partner with the local authority through the Public Private Partnership in the sanitation sector.
Kalumbila district was declared a district in 2015 by then republican president Edgar Lungu detaching it from Solwezi.
