The Lusaka City Council has observed that during this festive period, the city experiences high levels of alcohol consumption as well as its abuse and also a worrying growing trend in underage drinking especially in the peri-urban areas.
LCC Public Relations Manager Mwaka Nakweti has reminded Bar, Night club and Casino owners that it is illegal to admit, sell or deliver intoxicating liquor to underage patrons as such acts contravene with the Liquor Licensing Act No. 20 of 2011 and the Casino Act.
“As a local authority, we will continue conducting spot inspection in business trading in liquor to ensure that they operate under the stipulated guidelines,” Ms. Nakweti said.
She noted that Bars, night clubs and casinos that will be found admitting, selling and delivering liquor to underage persons will risk their licenses revoked and prosecution.
“We also wish to warn shops and individuals that are in the habit of selling liquor without a license that we will soon catch up with them,” She said.
Ms. Nakweti stated that Members of the public are therefore encouraged to report all suspecting bars, Nightclubs, Casinos, Shops and individuals involved in such activities to Lusaka City Council through their Public Health Inspectorate Unit in the site offices and Civic Center.
