UNITED Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi says he is looking forward to further strengthening collaboration under the new leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema.

Mr. Grandi said Zambia had since 1960s, demonstrated remarkable generosity by providing sanctuary to those seeking international protection and by including refugees in national services and systems.

He said in his congratulatory letter to President Hichilema that Zambia had earned the respect of the international community through these acts of solidarity.

“I have the honour to congratulate you on your election as the President of the Republic of Zambia and wish you every success in carrying out the important duties entrusted to you,” Mr. Grandi said.

He said he was also grateful for the pledges made by the Zambian Government at the Global Refugee Forum held in December 2019 and that UNHCR remains fully committed to supporting the effective implementation of these pledges.

Mr. Grandi expressed his sincere appreciation for the long-standing partnership between UNHCR and Zambia and for the continued generosity towards refugees in the country.

“I look forward to further strengthening our collaboration under your leadership. Please accept, Sir, the assurances of my highest consideration,” he said.
