Lusaka, Zambia, June 13, 2024 — ZESCO Limited has successfully completed the construction of a crucial 330kV transmission line connecting the Kabwe Step Down Substation in Kabwe district to the Pensulo Substation in Serenje district. This self-financed project creates a second power transmission corridor benefiting five provinces: Muchinga, Luapula, Northern, Eastern, and Central.

The new transmission line dramatically increases power transmission capacity for these regions, ending the annual power outages previously caused by maintenance on the existing line. This development enhances ZESCO’s asset maintenance program and strengthens the power supply security for Zambia’s northern region.

Additionally, this line is integral to the future Zambia-Tanzania-Kenya interconnector project, which will link the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) with the East African Power Pool (EAPP), facilitating new opportunities for power trading between these markets.

To commission the new transmission line, ZESCO has scheduled power outages in the Northern, Muchinga, Luapula, Eastern, and Central provinces on the following dates:

– Sunday, June 16, 2024: 07:00 to 15:00 hours

– Wednesday, June 19, 2024: 06:00 to 16:00 hours

This is contained in a statement Issued by ZESCO LIMITED Spokesperson Matongo Maumbi.
