Yesterday around 02 hours, Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) chairperson Justice Esau Chulu declared the UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema as duly elected seventh Republican President. This sent the UPND supporters from all walks of life into jubilation. Despite the night dawning, people from various townships flung into town celebrating. Most of them where seen shouting the UPND slogan while flashing the party symbol.
However, during the celebration, some shops where looted. North western province Commissioner of police Joel Njase has described the act as criminal. He has however disclosed that police officers who were on the ground managed to apprehend 5 male suspects and identified them as Jackson kapelembe aged 24 of kyawama compound, Chris kamakanta aged 28 of kazomba, Julius kaponda aged 18 of island, Habeenzu Muzoka aged 27 and Simon Luka aged 27 both of Messengers compound. He said the suspects were found with assorted type of groceries which have been kept awaiting identification from the complainants . He further warned those who want to engage in criminal acts that the police will not hesitate to arrest such individuals and called on the UPND party leadership to ensure that, they advise their cadres accordingly as they celebrate. He said the Police remains firm in it’s conviction to carry out their duties and will ensure that the mandate under article 193 (2) of the amendment Act No.2 of 2016 is enforced.
