Southern Africa Development Community Truck Drivers Association (SADC-TDA) has called on employers of drivers in the region to improve their conditions of service so that they can get jobs from their countries of origin.
SADC-TDA Secretary General Kaiko Wamunyima said better conditions of service would help countries retain their drivers instead of the current situation.
Mr. Wamunyima said drivers should also exercise their right of belonging to the union of their choice.
He said the association is aware of the protest taking place in South Africa by truck drivers, where they are alleging that foreign drivers are taking up their jobs because of the cheap labour they provide to trucking companies based in their country.
Mr. Wamunyima said the truck drivers in South Africa are demanding for better conditions of service in terms of salaries among others.
He disclosed that measures being taken by authorities in that country to restrict or ban any foreign truck drivers from driving trucks with South African number plates is of concern.
The SADC-TDA Secretary General, appealed to the Zambian Government to also enforce laws available in the country on trucking companies’ operations.
He said this will compel trucking companies to start offering drivers better conditions of service.
