The Zambia Information Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) has called for innovation of the postal and courier sector in order to make it viable for it to effectively contribute to the country’s economic growth.

ZICTA acting director Mwenya Mutale notes that despite the sector facing various challenges, the postal services are far from being rendered irrelevant.

Speaking at the commemoration of the World Post Day under the theme ‘Innovate to Recover’, Mr. Mutale emphasized the need to change the narrative in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic which has left most economies crippled and disrupted Postal and courier services and I operations.

He said the pandemic is a wake up call which has brought about realisation of the relevance of innovation in the midst of lockdowns and a reduction of human to human interactions.

“Over the past 20 years, the courier sector at both global and national levels has experienced massive transformations in response to the needs of the market and interests of consumers” he observed and therefore called for the need to give the sector the prominence it deserves.

To the consumers, Mr. Mutale urged them to trust, utilise and explore the post and courier services and only use licensed operators for effective and efficient service delivery.

And Post and Courier Association of Zambia president Gabriel Mumba disclosed that the sector has substantially grown with Post and courier companies growing from seven (7) to forty six (46).

He said the sector is one of the most important as it contributes to job creation, tax contributions and information movement across the globe in Zambia as well as contributes to the country’s GDP.

He has made and appeal to ZICTA being the regulators, to finalize the road naming project as it is Important to courier companies that depend on accurate GPS address system to deliver urgent mails and parcels without difficulties.
