Some Mufumbwe residents yesterday protested against the appointment of Mr. Elijah Munyompe as District Commissioner for that district and locked the office.
Mr. Munyompe’s appointment followed the withdraw of Mr. Patrick Kalelemba as District Commissioner for Mufumbwe by President Hakainde Hichilema last week.
The withdrawal of Mr. Kalelemba’s appointment followed the protest by party structures in the district that Mr. Kalelemba was not a UPND member.
And last week following the withdrawal of the appointment of Mr. Kalelemba, President Hichilema appointed Mr. Munyompe to replace Kalelemba.
The move resulted into the other camp protesting against Mr. Munyompe and locked the office.
However, the protest was short-lived after alert police moved in and thwarted it.
By 14 hours, the situation was calm and peace has retained in the district and that Mr. Munyompe will be reporting for work according to North Western Province Permanent Secretary Col Grandson Katambi.
And Col Katambi says it is unwise to go against the presidential appointment because it is only him (HH) who has powers to appoint and fire anyone.
He said the President has constitutional powers to appoint anyone and that when he makes an appointment, no one can oppose.
“So, for us as provincial administration we cannot go against the President because am here to save the President, “said Col Katambi.
He has appealed to the people of Mufumbwe to respect the appointments by the President saying challenging presidential appointments will not take them anywhere in terms of development.
He also called for unit among the people in the district for the sake of development.
“Because it will be very difficult for government to take development to Mufumbwe if people are not united and working in disarray, “he said.
